SAN DIEGO – Playing consecutive weekends against ranked GSAC opponents, the Hawks baseball team was unable to come up with a win on Friday.

 

The No. 13 Vanguard Lions took Game 1 5-2 before winning 11-3 in Game 2.

 

The loss drops the Hawks to 4-19 on the season and 1-5 in GSAC play. Vanguard improved to 18-2 and 2-0 respectively.

 

Vanguard started the scoring off in the second inning with two runs coming off of two fielder's choices. SDCC added a run in the bottom of the inning. Jalani Brown doubled to left field scoring Jacob Luther.

 

The Lions added two in the sixth for a 4-1 lead. SDCC scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Luther grounded out to short that brought Ryan Lystlund home from third.

 

Davin Burroughs, Aaron Hoch, and Lystlund all had two hits. Jack Schlotman went for the Hawks in Game 1. He threw five innings allowing three earned on six hits with two strikeouts. Pablo Small finished the game in relief allowing just one run.

 

Vanguard started off Game 2 just like Game 1. Chad Sutton hit a bases-clearing double. He later scored for the 4-run second inning from the Lions.

 

SDCC added a run in the bottom of the inning. Tre Pankratz scored off a double play. The Lions answered with two 3-run homers. One in the third and one in the fourth to extend their lead to 10-1. The Hawks added runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the seventh. They were held to three hits in the game.

 

Both teams are back in play on Saturday at Morley Field.
