SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In the second round of the GSAC Tournament, the SDCC women's basketball saw itself in the lead against No. 2 Westmont College, 15-14, after the first quarter.
But the Warriors showed why they are the second-ranked team in the nation and the No. 1 seed in the GSAC Tournament. They outscored the Hawks 24-4 in the second quarter and lead the rest of the way for the win to knock SDCC out of the tournament.
"I'm proud of our start against Westmont," head coach Shawn Chaffin said. "We came out and attacked. Izzy was phenomenal tonight."
Izzy, Isabel Feller, scored a team-high 19 points with eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. She hit five 3-pointers in the night and shot 54 percent from the floor. Maddison Zugna added nine points and six rebounds.
In the first, Feller started the scoring off for the night. Neither team found the bottom of the net in the first two minutes of play. Feller's layup gave SDCC a brief 2-0 lead. Westmont took the lead right after with a triple from Iyree Jarrett.
Cynnadie Whatley added a trey of her own to give the Hawks the lead again. They would keep that lead for the entire quarter. Feller scored the next eight points for the Hawks to give them a 13-6 lead, their largest of the night. Westmont responded and brought the Hawks lead down to one.
Westmont took control of the game in the second quarter starting off the period with a 13-0 run. Two of SDCC's points in the quarter were free throws from Zugna and Whatley. The Hawks didn't hit a field goal until 18 seconds were remaining in the half. At that point, Westmont had built a 35-19 lead.
Feller hit three more triples in the third to end her scoring for the night. The Hawks' lone senior, Courtney Cranston, ended her career with the Hawks scoring two points with a pair of rebounds.
"We will miss Courtney next year," coach Chaffin said. "She has been the heart and soul of our team for the last couple of years."
The Hawks end their season with an overall record of 9-19 but ended the playoff drought with their win over OUAZ on Wednesday.
