Barb is entering her third season at the helm of the SDC Volleyball program. Under Wnek’s leadership, Hawks Volleyball came off of their first winning season since 2002. They are competing well in the strong, nationally ranked GSAC Conference. The Hawks will continue to play a tough schedule of matches in 2016 and hope to make a strong showing in the conference this season with 10 returners and 5 new recruits to round out the squad.
Barb Wnek, coached for 17 years leading the Point Loma Nazarene University Women’s volleyball program to national recognition. She was inducted into the NAIA National Hall of Fame in 2005, and became a member of the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Hall of Fame, Coach Category in November 2006. Just one year out of college, Barbara (Rozendal) Wnek took over PLNU’s struggling volleyball program and quickly transformed the team into a perennial NAIA power. During her 17 years as head coach, the Crusaders/Sea Lions compiled a 357-194 overall record. Under Wnek, PLNU made eight National Tournament appearances, posting a 30-12 mark in tournament play. Her squads reached two semifinals and played in the 1996 National Championship match which at the time was the highest team finish in the 51 year Point Loma athletic history. Wnek was named the NAIA National Tournament Coach of the Year following PLNU’s 1996 Runner-Up finish. After a semifinal showing in 2001, she was selected as the NAIA/American Volleyball Association National Coach of the Year, and celebrated her 300th victory in coaching. During her tenure, Wnek coached more than 13 two-time All-Americans, 20 All-Conference picks, and PLNU won two Golden State Athletic Conference championships and three NAIA Region II titles. In both 1990 and 2000 Wnek was named as the Golden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. .
As a collegiate athlete Wnek, then Rozendal, was on scholarship at Biola University where she was a 2-time NAIA All-American, National All-Tournament selection twice, and competed in the National Championship final match in 1985. In her senior year, she was selected as the District 3 Player of the Year. She still holds the career ace record at her alma mater. Upon graduation, Rozendal (Wnek) traveled to Japan, Korea, and the Philippines with Athletes in Action and played collegiate and professional teams in those countries while serving Christ and ministering to the communities of people after the matches. She also traveled with Internaional Ambassadors on a Holland/England tour playing some of the top teams in the world at that time.
Barb grew up in the East County, and attended Grossmont High School where she was a standout athlete in both Volleyball and Softball.
In recent years, Wnek has taught and coached at all levels. She was the Head Coach at Christian High School for several years following her resignation from PLNU. She also coached for the junior high and assisted a season at Cuyamaca College. Barb is presently an Assistant Professor in the Kinesiology Department at SDCC teaching Coaching Theory classes, and Teaching Methods.
