With the split, the Hawks sit even at 1-1. The Sea Beggars win their first game of the season and now have a 1-3 record.

After being in full control of the first two sets in Game 1, the Hawks let their lead slip including a 28-26 thriller in set 4, tying the match at 2-2.

The first 12 points in the fifth and deciding set were even with the score tied at six. Megan Smith tallied a kill off an Ashlyn Riding pass for the sixth point.

But Providence Christian scored the next four points to take a 10-6 lead. SDC would get no closer than three the rest of the set as they dropped the final match 15-12.

Riding finished the first match with 48 assists. Alli Beezer led with 19 kills. Molly Witzmann was next with 13 and Alexa Lambert also was in double digits with 10.  

Match two was very similar to match one as each set was closely contested.

In set one, the Hawks rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to tie it at 4-4. Beezer notched three straight kills, all from Riding.

Facing set point for Providence Christian, SDC scored three straight points for the 26-24 set win.

Although the score was close in the end, the Hawks never trailed in set 2. With the score tied 17-17, SDC finished the set on an 8-4 run to claim the second set.

In set three, the Hawks trailed early on but were able to close out the third for a sweep and their first win of the season.

SDC travels to Simpson University next week in the Simpson Classic with games against New Hope Christian, Pacific Union College and tournament host Simpson.  

Looking to make it consecutive years with a winning record for the first time since 1999, the Hawks will host Providence Christian College for a season-opening double-header on Aug. 19. SDC then will travel to Simpson University for a 3-game tournament on Aug. 26. They will play New Hope Christian, Pacific Union College and Simpson.

A home game sprinkled in against Johnson & Wales at the end of the month before the Hawks hit the road again in another tournament, this time four games total.

SDC hosts Vanguard in their GSAC opener on Sept. 6 with their last game of the season at Arizona Christian on Oct. 11.

• Hawks bookended the first set with a 4-0 run to start and a 6-0 run to end for the first point.

• William Jessup held a brief lead in the second set before SDC took over at 4-3 and never looked back.

• Set three saw five ties, with the last at 5-5. The Hawks made a late comeback, down 23-14, scoring six straight points to get the set within three points. The Warriors scored the next two for the set win.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 11-9 overall and 3-7 in GSAC play. The Royals improve to an even 9-9 on the season and 6-4 in conference.

In Set 1, SDC tallied the first point to start the game as Molly Witzmann tallied a kill off a pass from Ashlyn Riding. Their lead was short-lived as the Royals gained full control of the game at 7-6. HIU finished the set on an 18-7 run to capture the first point. The Royals hit an impressive 46 percent.

The Hawks battled early in Set 2 as both teams shared points for the first eight scores. HIU went on a 4-0 run to lead 8-4 but the Hawks clawed their way back to a deficit of one with the score 9-8 in favor of the Royals. SDC kept the score within one point up until 13-12. The Royals rattled off seven straight points to take a stronghold of the set and taking a 2-0 lead.

Set 3 saw a see-saw battle of sorts. The two teams were tied seven times, lastly at 18-18. Juliana Gutknecht rattled off a kill from Riding to give SDC the lead for good in the set. Alli Beezer and Jeyci Kaili scored the last three points for the Hawks giving them the set win and forcing Set 4.

In Set 4, no team had more than a three point lead as both teams were fighting to sway the momentum of the set.  The biggest lead for SDC came at 14-11 when Bevan Haskell tallied one of her three kills in the game. Tied 21-21 late in the set, Conley Kipp gave the Royals the lead for good to clinch the first to three set wins.

Gutknecht led the team with 16 kills, followed by Beezer with 13 as the only players in double figures. Riding tallied 36 assists and Aleka Estrada had a team-high 17 digs.

The Hawks are back on the road this Friday for a weekend double-header. SDC will face The Master's College on Friday, then No. 16 Westmont on Saturday.

LAKESIDE, Calif. - San Diego Christian was looking to showcase a convincing performance against Benedictine this afternoon, and did just that with a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-23, 25-22).

The Hawks now improve to 11-8 on the season while Benedictine falls to 10-6.

In the first set, SDC raced to a 14-5 lead with the help of assist leader, Ashlyn Riding. Numerous kills by Alexa Lambert simply was too much for Benedictine as the Hawks cruised to take the first set 25-13.

The second set was a different story, clutch kills by Molly Witzmann gave SDC the lead 23-22. A back and forth affair kept Benedictine in the hunt to steal the set. Meanwhile, Benedictine's Alexa Jimenez makes a crucial mistake with an attack error ultimately costing Benedictine the set. SDC notches the 2nd set 25-23.

In the third set, Benedictine's only lead came early with a slight 8-7 advantage. The Hawks soar to a comfortable 22-18 lead with the kill by Juliana Gutknecht. Another attack error from Benedictine's Alexa Jimenez moves the lead to 23-18 and SDC never looked back outlasting the Redhawks 25-22 to finish the game.

Ashlyn Riding was a game changer for the Hawks with an assist percentage of 80 on 39 attempts. Setting up SDC's attackers for success with a total of 41 kills for the match.

The Hawks will travel to Fullerton tomorrow night to take on the Royals. The match is set for 7 p.m.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in GSAC play. Vanguard improves to 16-4 on the season and a spotless 9-0 in conference.

The Lions led from start to finish in Set 1. They scored 10 of the first 15 points. Alexa Lambert tallied a kill from an Ashlyn Riding pass to bring the deficit to three as the Hawks trailed 15-12. VU ended the set on a 10-8 run to capture the first point.

The start of Set 2 was far more competitive. Within the first 16 points, there was a total of eight ties. Vanguard pulled away with a 10-4 run giving them an 18-12 lead. The Lions held serve the rest of the set and found themselves up 2-0.

Set 3 found success for the Hawks. Tied 7-7, SDC went on a run to separate them from the Lions. Juliana Gutknecht tallied two kills in the 4-0 run to give the Hawks an 11-7 lead. SDC led or was tied most of the way until Vanguard took a late 23-22 lead that forced Barb Wnek to call a timeout as she saw her team's lead fade away. The Hawks answered the call from Coach Wnek scoring the next three points, giving them the set win and forcing Set 4. Gutknecht added a kill in the last three points before two errors from the Lions.

In Set 4, the beginning of the set was a lot closer than the end. The Hawks and Lions again battled to gain the early lead. An Alli Beezer kill squared the set at 10-10 before Vanguard took control and went on a 13-1 run. A service error was the last fatal error for the Hawks as VU took the set, winning 3-1.

Gutknecht led the team with 14 kills followed by Molly Witzmann at 11. Riding finished with a team high 31 assists and Aleka Estrada totaled a team high 11 digs.

SDC is back in action on Friday as they host Benedictine at 2 p.m. at the East County Volleyball Association gym. Address to the gym is 11655 Riverside Dr. #161, Lakeside, CA 92040.

With the win, SDC matches last year's win total at 10-7. Life Pacific falls to 0-8.

The Hawks will be back in GSAC play as they host No. 9 Vanguard on Tuesday.

La Sierra defeated the Hawks 3-1 back on Sept. 22.

Set 1 was a seesaw battle, seeing the score tied 10 times. The Hawks got the better end of it taking the 21-20 lead and finishing out the set. Alexa Lambert tallied a kill to give SDC a 23-21 lead before a service ace from Molly Witzmann and an attacking error from the Golden Eagles gave the Hawks the set win.

Set 2 was just the same, close throughout seeing many lead changes and ties. Juliana Gutknecht gave the Hawks a 21-20 lead with a kill. Alli Beezer followed suit with a kill of her own as SDC held off the late charge from La Sierra. A service error by LSU and a Lambert kill gave the Hawks the last two points as they were the first to 25.

The Hawks looked to seal the sweep early firing off to a 7-2 lead early on in Set 3. The Golden Eagles showed no quit and eventually tied the set at 13-13. Ashlyn Riding earned the 14th point of the set for the Hawks giving them the lead for good. SDC scored the last four points of the set.

Gutknecht led the Hawks with 11 kills followed by Lambert's and Beezer's eight. Riding averaged just over 10 assists per set finishing with 31. Witzmann totaled eight blocks on the night, two solos and six block assists.

SDC will travel to San Dimas, CA to take on Life Providence College on Friday. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 8-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Firestorm fall to 2-12 on the season and 0-7 in the GSAC.

Eight ties were in Set 1 as each team battled to take the opening set. The Hawks' last lead was 7-6 as the Firestorm held serve and prevented SDC from going on a big run. Facing set point for ACU, SDC scored three straight points to put the pressure on the Firestorm. But ACU tallied the 25th point in the set off a kill by Samantha McCants for the set win.

Set 2 was tight from the get-go with nine ties within the first 20 points. SDC took the lead for good at 14-13. Allie Beezer registered two serving aces and Ashlyn Riding tallied a kill for the set win.

The Hawks stormed out to an 8-3 lead in Set 3 looking to take a 2-1 set advantage. But the Firestorm answered back to tie it 8-8 and took a 10-9 lead. Tied at 16-16, Beezer's kill gave SDC the lead and ACU didn't have an answer. Juliana Gutknecht's service ace was the 25th point in the set.

SDC led from start to finish in Set 4. Beezer, again, was at it again tallying the set's first point. Molly Witzmann registered a kill to give the Hawks a 10-4 lead. The closest the Firestorm would get would be five points at 12-7. SDC though went on a 13-7 run to close the game.

Beezer and Witzmann led the team with 14 kills apiece. Gutknecht was right behind with 13 as the only other in double figures. Riding's 46 assists were a game-high. Witzmann led all players with six blocks.

The Hawks are back on the court Tuesday as they host La Sierra University. SDC fell to the Golden Eagles on Sept. 22 in four sets. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
