EL CAJON, Calif. – Needing to win both games Saturday and get help from other teams in the GSAC to make the playoffs, the SDC baseball team split with Hope International.

The Hawks end their season with a 27-18 overall record and an even 15-15 mark in the GSAC. HIU, playing their first ever season, finished four games behind the Hawks in conference and end their season with a 21-28-1 overall record and 11-19 conference slate.

Needing the wins, the Hawks started off well in Game 1. A pickoff throw from the HIU pitcher that went wild scored the first run for SDC. David Vega singled home Steven Pico in the second inning to give SDC a 2-0 lead. The lead could've been larger but the Hawks left six runners on base in the first three innings, including bases loaded with one out in the third.

The Royals grabbed their first lead of the game in the fifth inning with three runs. They added another run in the sixth leading 4-2.

Caeden Barnes tied the game in the seventh thanks to a 2-run homer.

But a sac fly in the eighth was the answer the Royals had and secured the win.

The Hawks tallied 14 hits in the game, six players had two hits apiece. Starter Gio Ochoa was responsible for the five runs in seven innings pitched.

Game 2 was a quick pitchers duel lasting 1:15. Carlos Ochoa was scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning with a double to center scoring Stephan Haviar.

Justin Distefano added another run with a solo shot in the sixth for the 2-0 lead.

The Royals threatened in the seventh with a solo homer with one out of Zachary Ambrose. Ambrose was able to secure the save getting a groundout to third to secure the save, his third on the year.

The Hawks needed Biola to lose both games today if SDC happened to lose one of the two. The Eagles won the first game against Vanguard but dropped the second. Biola will advance as the fifth seed to the tournament based on head-to-head results against the Hawks, with the Eagles winning 2-1.

EL CAJON, Calif. – The Hawks baseball team used late-inning heroics in the second game of the DH against The Master's on Saturday as SDC split with the Mustangs.

SDC scored seven unanswered runs in Game 2 to claim a 7-4 win before falling in Game 1 9-2.

With the split, the Hawks sit at 18-14 overall and 10-11 in GSAC play. The Mustangs now have a record of 24-12 and 13-8 respectively.

The Mustangs scored early and often in Game 1. TMC got a little help from the Hawks as two errors quickly turned into turn runs. The Mustangs led 3-0 after the second.

Homeruns would be the story in the third inning. Michael Sexton hit a 3-run bomb to right field for a 6-0 lead. Nick Covello went back-to-back with a towering shot to the same right field.

Steven Pico showed his muscle in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to left but The Master's led 7-1 after three. Carlos Ochoa also hit a homerun, this time in the seventh but it wasn't enough.

SDC starter Michael Robards went eight innings in the loss. He allowed nine runs, six earned, with 11 hits and seven strikeouts. Bobby Mead led the team with two hits.

The Mustangs again got off to a hot start, this time scoring four runs in the first two innings. SDC didn't answer until a 3-run fourth inning brought the deficit down to one.

Steven Pico hit a bases-loaded slicing double to right center scoring three. He was later thrown out at home plate as a Ryan Alvarez single found the outfield but a good relay tagged Pico at home as the Mustangs kept their 4-3 lead.

Brooks Fages hit an RBI double tying the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning.

In the sixth, the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs. David Vega's hard-hit ball to short came home for the force out at the plate and the first out of the inning. Mead came through with a single through the left side, giving the Hawks a 5-4 lead. Stephen Haviar's sac fly to left added the second run of the inning and Justin DiStefano's infield single score Vega for the 7-4 lead to cap all scoring.

Daniel Kopas earned the win in relief throwing two innings of no-hit ball. He added three strikeouts and faced one batter over the minimum.

Starter Mark Young was tagged with four runs in four innings and four hits. He struck out three and walked five.

The Hawks hit the road next week for a crucial 3-game series against Biola.
[Baseball] Mustangs End Hawks' Winning Streak at Eight Games

EL CAJON, Calif. – The scoring in the game against The Master's College came in bunches Friday afternoon.

The Hawks were on the other end of a 13-10 slugfest, ending their 8-game winning streak. With the loss, SDC falls to 17-13 overall and 9-10 in conference. The Mustangs improved to 23-11 and 12-7 respectively.

A grand-slam by The Master's Nick Covello capped a 5-run first, giving TMC a big 5-0 lead.

The Hawks were able to add four in the third. Justin DiStefano hit a 2 RBI triple to left field scoring Ryan Alvarez and David Vega. Patrick Vizcaino then doubled home DiStefano from third. Stephan Haviar laster hit an RBI single to right for the fourth run, cutting their deficit to just one.

The Master's waited no time answering back with another big inning, this time five runs in the top of the fourth, right after SDC looked to gain some momentum. The Hawks trailed 10-4 after four innings.

Trailing 10-5 in the sixth, Nicholas Quintero's inside-the-park homer gave SDC new life. Quintero hit a deep fly ball to right center. The center fielder ran into the fence allowing Quintero time to hustle all the way home, just beating the tag with a head-first slide. Quintero had to leave the game after the homerun as he was shaken up after the play.

But just like all game, the Mustangs countered SDC's rally with three runs in the seventh to retake a sizable 13-7 lead after seven innings.

The Hawks were not done, however. In the ninth, Vizcaino hit a towering 3-run homer to left field scoring Alvarez and Vega. But it was too little too late as the Mustangs held on for the win.

SDC starter Gio Ochoa lasted just four innings allowing 10 runs, six earned, with five hits and a strikeout.

Vizcaino led the team with 4 RBI and three hits.

These same teams will battle it out in a double-header on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Grossmont College.
