[Men's Basketball] Dalante Dunklin Named to the 2015-16 All-GSAC Team Presented by Under Armour

SANTEE, Calif. – Dalante Dunklin was one of 11 named to the 2015-16 All-GSAC Team presented by Under Armour released by the conference on Monday.

"Making the All-GSAC team means a lot to me," Dunklin said. "Through the grace of God I was able to go out each and every night and display the talents God blessed me with. But being named All-GSAC is bigger than me. It's an accomplishment that truly is a team award. I'd be lying if I said I earned this award on my own. My teammates and coaches put me in positions to be successful. So although my name is in the list its a team award that wouldn't have happened without God."

Dunklin was the lone member of the Hawks to earn this award as he finished the season averaging 20.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.

"Dalante came in and became a captain for us not based on talent but based on his work ethic and a team first mentality," Head Coach Edgar Mendez said. "He came to practice ready to get better and as you can see his play showed it. He continued to get better as the year went on."

The Hawks finished with their best record since the 2006-07 season at 11-15 overall and 4-12 in GSAC play. Dalante was a major part of that. He currently ranks 13th in the nation with points per game (20.4) on the season and 8th in steals per game (2.2).

"Heading into the season I didn't have any individual goals in mind," Dunklin said. "I just wanted to win ball games. Even though we didn't win as many games as we wanted we came out and fought every game. Regardless of which opponent we played we battled. On the other hand, we did accomplish a lot of firsts this season and to be apart of that and such a prestigious award is amazing.

"The GSAC is nationally recognized as one of the toughest NAIA conferences so to be able to land on a list like this is a testament to Gods grace and I'm honored to have been apart of it all."

Coach Mendez had nothing but great words for the senior who leaves SDC with the most points per game in the last 12 years.

"He has been great off the court. He is a good kid one that is well liked on the team and on campus. There is no ego to him. A lot of good players walk around like they are bigger than the game but he never carried himself that way. He was great on road trips and he let others get to know him and show not only his competitive side but also his sense of humor. Glad I had a chance to coach him."

The Firestorm improve to 20-5 and 8-4 respectively.

The Firestorm seemingly were in control from the opening tip. They rolled out to a 12-0 lead and took the air out of the gym. Shayne Travers' two free throws gave SDC their first two points with 15:01 remaining in the half. ACU kept their double digit lead however for most of the half until the very end of the first.

The Hawks went on an 8-3 run to end the half and trail by eight, 41-33.

But even with how slow the Hawks started the first, they were a whole different team in the second half scoring six of the first eight points scored to bring their deficit to four.

As the Firestorm brought their lead back to within double digits, the Hawks fought back and grabbed their first lead of the game with an 11-0 run capped by a Travers 3-pointer with the Hawks now leading 58-57. Their 16-0 run ended when the Firestorm added two free throws with 7:08 remaining in the game.

ACU regained the lead with 1:04 remaining in the game before a Travers layup with 34 seconds left gave them the slim 1-point lead. ACU was fouled with 22 seconds left as Chris Sterling had two free throws to take the lead. He missed both but Jackson Helms grabbed the offensive rebound, made the bucket and got fouled to convert the 3-point play with 19 seconds left.

Head Coach Edgar Mendez called a timeout with six seconds left to draw up a play that gave Dunklin the floater to force overtime but it was just a little off .

Dunklin finished with 15 points.
